US punk rockers The August Guns took some free time to talk about their new EP, titled “Born Into Noise”. Check out the full interview below!
Hello, The August Guns! Thanks for taking time to answer a couple of questions for us. Would you mind introducing your band to our readers?
You are very welcome, thank you for taking the time to interview us! We’re a melodic punk band from Des Moines Iowa. We’re a three piece (Guitar-Micah, Bass-Kirk, Drums-Royce) for fans of Thrice, Tiny Moving Parts, and Saosin.
How would you describe the punk rock scene in Des Moines, IA?
Currently Des Moines is very much an Indie/Folk/Metal music scene. Most shows we play end up pulling together a few different styles of bands, but this leads to some fun opportunities to play for people who normally may not take the time to listen to you. We try to give our best on stage regardless of what kind of show it is.
You are back with a new EP, titled “Born into Noise”. How long have you worked on this release and how was your writing process?
We began working on “Born Into Noise” as a band back in November 2018. I (Micah) have a pool of instrumental demos which I continually add to. When it’s time to write a new record, each of us chooses our 5 favorite demos. The demos with the most votes between the 3 of us become the next EP. Once we have our chosen songs, we storyboard out what we want the record to say and begin adapting each song to tell a specific part of the story.
What’s the story behind the overall EP and where did you find your inspiration?
The story behind the EP is one of finding quiet steady truth in a world of ideological noise. It only takes me a few minutes of checking social media to get my fill of arguments, politics, moralizing, advertising, catastrophes, and mind-numbing entertainment. My wife and I had our first daughter this year, so I’ve been thinking about the confusing world she just entered. For us as a band, the quiet truth that cuts through the noise of this world is only found in Jesus.
You also unveiled a music video for “Speak True”. How was the shooting experience?
It was awesome! We got to shoot at one of our church locations. The building was recently renovated and has a beautiful hardwood floor that’s over 100 years old. The natural lighting and stained-glass windows made for a gorgeous backdrop. The outside scenes were shot in an expansive cemetery in downtown Des Moines. Our actor, make-up artist, and videographer are all friends of ours, so it was a ton of fun to bring them into the process. We are blessed with some talented friends.
Do you have any other projects in the making for 2020?
We’re kicking off the writing cycle for the next EP in January. Hopefully the new record will be out in early Summer 2020. Aside from that we’ll be playing as many gigs as feasible beginning in the Spring and seeing what doors open for us.
The last words are for you. If you have a message to convey, here’s your chance!
There’s a lot of noise in this world, a lot of chaos and pain. It can feel like God doesn’t hear or doesn’t care or doesn’t exist in the first place. But if you slow down, listen, and seek Him, He’s not deaf, not absent, and not far.
Thank you again for taking the time to interview us. <3
