Hello, These Five Years! Thanks for your time! For those who don’t know you yet, would you mind introducing your band to our readers? Hey! We’re These Five Years from Cardiff in South Wales, thanks for having us!

How would you describe your overall sound? We’re heavily influenced by modern pop punk bands like Trash Boat, Knuckle Puck, and ROAM – but definitely more on the emo side of things. Angsty boys that think too much.

How do you manage your time between your personal life and the band? Isn’t it hard? We all work full-time Mon-Fri, 9-5, which is a blessing in some ways as planning in advance is easy. Keeping up with the increasing demands of the band on top of our day jobs though, is another story! It’s incredibly hard for sure, but if anything that motivates us to work even harder.

You’re about to release your new EP, “This Could All Be So Easy”. What kind of songs can we expect on this release? It’s definitely a darker release. We experimented with things like spoken word, ambient guitars, and  really channelling our aggression where it needed to be. One of our favourite songs is the opening track ‘Better the Devil’, and it’s a pretty big departure from what we’ve put out so far. I think it’s going to surprise some people.

How long have you worked on this EP? We wrote ‘I Hope You Know’ over a year ago now, and the EP gradually built up from there. It wasn’t until Stereo Brain Records became interested in doing a release with us and we wrote ‘Landing Light’ that it really started to take shape though. Some tracks like ‘Enclosure’ came together quite quickly, whereas say ‘Mea Culpa’ took on a number of different guises before we settled on an overall theme we were happy with.

Tell us one thing no one else knows about this record. The original second verse of ‘Landing Light’ was a detailed description of how not to make a cup of tea. In the end we thought the metaphor was a bit much…!

Which song is the one that, according to you, best represents the spirit of this EP? Definitely ‘Landing Light’. We all come from very different musical backgrounds and that song feels very much like we all got our input in sonically. The bridge is a highlight of our live set now, we took a lot of influence from bands like Belmont and Like Pacific in the rhythms and guitar work for the track.

Though the EP can feel quite pessimistic at times, the ongoing theme is to never give up on who you are and where you’re going. Personally, going back to my past to learn how to move forward was vital in writing this record, and has been a really cathartic experience.

Do you have any other projects in the making? Well, there’s the hardcore side project we’re not supposed to talk about…! We’re going to see how this EP does and make plans from there, but we’re already booking some super exciting shows for 2020 and beyond.

The last words are for you. If you have a message to convey, here’s your chance! Thank you so much for reading this! We’re so proud of ‘This Could All Be So Easy’ and we’d love to know what you think of it. Rise above everything ❤
