Those Without – “Blackout//Amnesia” (review)

Those Without is a five piece pop punk band from the town of Örebro, Sweden. The band released, a few weeks ago, their EP named Blackout//Amnesia”. Derek, our reviewer, took time to listen to this EP and here’s what he had to say about it!

Those Without

The newest release from Those Without, entitled Blackout//Amnesia, is overall a decent release. The strongest elements of the record come from the instrumental work. They are heavy and melodic in the correct places for the most part. The songs in general are sometimes catchy but sometimes feel a bit formulaic. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but the EP is a mixed bag. There are a couple of tracks that feel like filler, but at the same time, there are tracks that truly stand out. The vocal hooks could use work overall, as the choruses kind of blend together and occasionally fail to make an impression.

I don’t hate this record, but I didn’t love it either. Those Without need to take the talent they have and hone it more. Perhaps experiment with different guitar styles and effects. Try out different vocal harmonies to make the choruses pop more and really engage the listener. The best example of what the band can be at their best, melodically and instrumentally, is the final track on the EP, a song called “Untitled Document.” I hope that Those Without goes more in this direction in the future because they do have the potential to be truly great.
