What Happened To Your Band? got the chance to talk to Stoner from the alternative rock band Thieves & Lovers, about their upcoming album ‘Long Goodnight’.
Hello Thieves & Lovers. Thank you so much for doing this interview with us. Could you please introduce your band to our readers? Hey guys, Stoner here. Thanks so much for having us! We’re Thieves & Lovers, an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, CA. We recently relocated to Pittsburgh, PA – the other side of the country. We’re always on the move!
How did you guys put this band together? Thieves & Lovers came about originally as a side project for me (Stoner). I played lead guitar in another band in LA that was really moving forward, but I had all these other songs sitting around that didn’t fit the vibe of that band. I had fronted my own band before, but to be honest the idea didn’t really appeal to me all that much. I said “What the hell”, ran with it, and here we are!
You recently released your single ‘Long Goodnight’ ahead of the release of your upcoming album. What’s the story behind this track? The song came about during a really weird point in my life. I had been living in Los Angeles for almost 10 years, and the bottom had just dropped out. Everything seemed to fall apart at the same time, as things tend to do. One day I woke up and it all just hit me – that chapter in my life was over. It’s a really difficult thing to deal with, doors closing. So I turned to the only thing that has ever gotten me out of a head space like that – music.
How have people responded to it so far? We heard it and we absolutely loved it. Great job! Thanks very much! It was just released last Friday (2/24/17), but it’s gotten a great response.
How different is your upcoming album ‘Long Goodnight’ going to be from your latest EP ‘Seasons’? The new record is definitely heavier, and a little darker. Seasons was really retrospective, but the new album is a bit more about being “in the moment”.
Is there a particular song you’re especially proud of on this record? I’d have to say all of them, but then again there’s only 3 (haha). My personal favorite would have to be the first single, “Long Goodnight”. The recording just came together perfectly.
I’m sure you guys have at least one funny story to tell us from your recording sessions! We started the recording process right in the middle of the 2016 US presidential election, so there were a lot of political jokes flying around the studio. We like to keep the atmosphere light, nothing but good vibes.
What or who influences the music that you write? That’s a dangerous question! I grew up on classic rock, 90’s alternative and pop punk. I like any kind of music that’s from the heart. I’m a huge fan of the songwriting of Brian Fallon (Gaslight Anthem) and Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac, the list goes on.
Do you plan on touring this year to promote the release of your upcoming album? We’re doing shows here and there while we finish the production of the album, and we’re gearing up for the promotional cycle. It’s going to be an exciting year!
Speaking of shows. ‘WHTYB’ is a webzine/PR agency based in France. Have you ever visited our country? You guys should plan a show over there! We would love to come to France! We have never played a show outside the United States, and are really looking forward to an opportunity like that, when it presents itself.
